Tanzania Exports Near $20 Billion in 2026: What It Means for International Trade

Tanzania’s international trade sector recorded strong growth in 2026, with total exports of goods and services reaching almost US$20 billion.

According to the latest economic data published in September 2026, Tanzania’s exports of goods and services increased by 16.5% to approximately US$19.99 billion in the year ending July 2026.

The growth was mainly driven by higher earnings from gold, manufactured goods and other export sectors. Goods exports alone increased by 20.7% to approximately US$11.95 billion.

What Is Driving Tanzania’s Export Growth?

Gold Remains Tanzania’s Leading Export Earner

Gold continues to play a major role in Tanzania’s export performance.

Gold export earnings increased by 37.4% to approximately US$5.67 billion during the year ending July 2026. Gold accounted for around 47.4% of Tanzania’s total merchandise export earnings during the period.

Higher international gold prices and increased domestic production were among the main factors supporting the growth of gold exports.

Manufactured Exports Grow by 46%

One of the most significant developments in Tanzania’s export performance is the rapid growth of manufactured goods.

Manufactured exports increased by 46% to approximately US$2.22 billion. Iron and steel products, glassware and textiles were among the products supporting this growth.

This trend is particularly important because it indicates that Tanzania’s export economy is gradually expanding beyond raw materials and traditional commodities.

A stronger manufacturing sector can also create additional demand for industrial machinery, production equipment, raw materials, intermediate goods and technical services.

Traditional Exports Continue to Grow

Tanzania’s traditional exports also recorded positive growth during the period.

Traditional exports increased by 14.9% to approximately US$1.63 billion. Tobacco, cashew nuts and coffee remained among the leading products in this category.

The reported export value reached approximately US$588.6 million for tobacco, US$479.3 million for cashew nuts and US$396 million for coffee.

Services Are Also Supporting Tanzania’s Foreign Earnings

Tanzania’s export growth is not limited to merchandise trade.

Service receipts increased to approximately US$8.03 billion, supported by travel and transport services.

Travel receipts alone reached around US$4.29 billion, highlighting the continued importance of tourism and related services to Tanzania’s foreign-exchange earnings.

The broader trend shows that Tanzania is developing multiple sources of foreign income, including mining, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and services.

What Does Tanzania’s Export Growth Mean for Iranian Exporters?

Tanzania’s export growth is more than just a domestic economic indicator. A growing export sector can influence the country’s industrial capacity, supply chains, investment needs and demand for imported goods and services.

As Tanzania expands its manufacturing and export capacity, local businesses may require more industrial machinery, production equipment, raw materials, chemicals, agricultural inputs and other intermediate products.

This could create areas of interest for Iranian companies operating in sectors such as industrial equipment, petrochemicals, chemicals, construction materials, agricultural machinery and other industrial products.

However, Tanzania’s export growth alone does not guarantee demand for a specific Iranian product. Each potential export opportunity should be evaluated through import data, market competition, pricing, tariffs, standards and local demand.

Potential Trade Opportunities in Tanzania

Based on Tanzania’s economic and industrial structure, several sectors may deserve closer examination by international suppliers:

  • Industrial machinery and equipment
  • Agricultural machinery and inputs
  • Chemicals and industrial materials
  • Petrochemical products
  • Construction materials
  • Manufacturing inputs and intermediate goods
  • Pharmaceutical products and medical equipment
  • Industrial raw materials

Tanzania can also be considered as an important East African market and a potential starting point for businesses seeking to explore wider regional trade opportunities.

Why Market Research Matters

Strong export growth can be an encouraging signal, but export decisions should not be based on headline figures alone.

Companies considering the Tanzanian market should examine:

  1. Which products Tanzania imports most?
  2. Who are the main suppliers?
  3. What are the prevailing import prices?
  4. What tariffs and customs requirements apply?
  5. Which standards and certifications are required?
  6. Which Iranian products can compete on price and quality?
  7. How can Iranian exporters identify reliable Tanzanian buyers and importers?

In other words, Tanzania’s export growth should be viewed as a starting point for deeper market research rather than simply as a positive economic headline.

Conclusion

Tanzania’s exports of goods and services increased by 16.5% to approximately US$19.99 billion in the year ending July 2026. Gold remained the largest export earner, while manufactured exports recorded particularly strong growth of 46%. Agriculture, tourism and other services also continued to contribute to Tanzania’s external earnings.

For Iranian businesses, these developments provide a reason to pay closer attention to Tanzania and the wider East African market. The most attractive opportunities, however, should be identified through detailed analysis of Tanzania’s import demand, competition, regulations and buyer requirements.

Tanzania’s export growth is not just an economic headline—it is a signal worth watching for businesses exploring new trade opportunities in East Africa.
