Tanzania Seeks Private Investment for Major Infrastructure Projects

Tanzania is stepping up efforts to attract private and international investors to major infrastructure projects. Transport, energy, mining, telecommunications and other productive sectors are among the priority areas where the government is seeking financing and private-sector partnerships.

TZS 477 Trillion Investment Target by 2030

According to reports published on October 19, 2026, Tanzania estimates that it will need approximately TZS 477 trillion in investment by 2030 to advance its development agenda. Around 70 percent of this amount is expected to come from the private sector.

The strategy supports Tanzania’s Dira 2050 national development vision, which aims to build a US$1 trillion economy and accelerate industrialisation.

Presenting Investment Opportunities to International Investors

Tanzanian public institutions presented investment opportunities to international investors during a project showcase in London. The event was convened by Stanbic Bank Tanzania in collaboration with law firm Clyde & Co on behalf of the government.

The showcase aimed to connect investors directly with project owners, address financing questions and encourage participation in projects being prepared for investment.

Transport, Energy and Mining in Focus

Transport and logistics: Ports, airports, railways and related infrastructure are key areas for potential investment. The Port of Dar es Salaam handled approximately 33.71 million tonnes of cargo in the 2025/26 financial year, an increase of 21.5 percent.

Energy: Electricity transmission and distribution, additional generation capacity and natural gas development are priorities as Tanzania seeks to meet rising demand from households and industry.

Mining and critical minerals: The government is encouraging mineral processing and greater domestic value addition, creating potential opportunities in mining equipment, processing technology and supporting infrastructure.

Telecommunications and digital infrastructure are also included in the investment pipeline.

Public-Private Partnerships and Project Financing

To meet its substantial investment needs, Tanzania is looking to mobilise capital through public-private partnerships (PPPs), commercial lenders, capital markets, development finance institutions and export credit agencies.

The success of this approach will depend on project preparation, transparent contracts, clear risk allocation, predictable regulations and commercially viable financing structures.

Opportunities for International Companies

Tanzania’s investment programme may create opportunities for international companies in construction, engineering, energy, mining equipment, transport, telecommunications and project finance.

Companies considering entry into the market should assess individual project tenders, investment registration requirements, sector-specific licences and financing arrangements before committing capital.

Attracting private investment is only the first step. Turning announced opportunities into financed contracts and operational infrastructure will be essential to delivering the country’s development goals.
